COCKENZIE HOUSE COMES HOME

We've Done It!

Cockenzie House and Gardens Awarded £628,800 to secure its future

The Trustees of Cockenzie House & Gardens are delighted to announce that the Scottish Land Fund has today (23rd November 2017) awarded to the Trust £628,800 to help secure the long term future of historic Cockenzie House, built in 1680, and its associated four acres of ground.

A group of volunteers took over the Cockenzie House four years ago when the owners wished to develop the disused nursing home into a youth hostel. With little over £2,000 and over 500 hours of voluntry effort, they have returned the House to its former entrepreneurial hub when it was owned by the famous Cadell family. It now houses 11 emerging businesses amongest its 35 studios and hosts regular craft, yoga, pilates and other activities as well as the unique Hecla Gallery and the popular Cadell's Cafe. In addition, the two self-catering cottages within the grounds welcome international visitors to Cockenzie & Port Seton all the year round.

The award will provide the trust with 95% of the funds the Trust hopes it needs to purchase the House and its listed Gardens, as well as development funding over the next two years. The Trust will now embark on a campaign to raise the remaining funds.

Marietta di Ciacca, Trustee, said "We are extremely excited by this award. The prospect of community ownership means so much and allows us to now fully invest in our services and our commitment to the community of Cockenzie & Port Seton".

Councillor John McMillian and Provost also commented "Cockenzie House and Gardens is increasingly becoming a real hub of the community - attracting locals and visitors alike from further afield. This announcement is a reflection of the vision and hard work of the many people who work so hard to make Cockenzie House such a wonderful place to visit and spend time. Clearly there is still a lot of work to do but I'm sure those involved with take great encouragement from this news".

This is one of six projects totalling £1,382,613 announced today. John Watt, Scottish Land Fund Committee Chair said "One of the many strengths of the Scottish Land Fund is its ability to respond flexibly to the individual needs of local communities".
